News Releases & Research Results

On March 9, 2017 (local time), the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED; President: Dr. Makoto Suematsu) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) in the Republic of Lithuania with the country’s Ministry of Health (Minister: Dr. Aurelijus Veryga).

In Lithuania, the government centrally manages citizens’ medical information, including electronic medical records, health checkup records, and personal genomic information. It is highly anticipated that this information can be utilized effectively to elucidate the causes of intractable and undiagnosed diseases. Lithuania’s Ministry of Health is in charge of funding the country’s biological and medical research projects. As both AMED and the Ministry of Health of Lithuania cover a wide spectrum of medical research ranging from basic to clinical research, the collaboration is anticipated to accelerate biological and medical research in Lithuania and Japan.

Based on the MOC, it is planned to conduct exchange of personnel and researchers, joint seminars and symposia, and cooperative research. Collaborative initiatives are presumed to initially start in the areas of intractable and undiagnosed diseases and cancer research.
