Outline

The results of research conducted by the Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo) according to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project.

The key results of research are as follows:

  • Of the oral biospecimens (saliva, supragingival plaque, and tongue swab) from 25,014 participants in the detailed long-term health survey, stored at the Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo), 1,289 saliva and plaque specimens were subjected to oral microbiome analysis for all oral microorganisms.
  • The results revealed that the “community structure differences between microbiomes" of saliva and plaque and the diversity of microorganisms were correlated with the severity of periodontal disease.

This research project was conducted according to the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project by AMED.

The results were published online in the open access journal “Frontiers Cellular and Infection Microbiology” on January 29.
