News Releases & Research Results

Outline

The National Cancer Center Hospital East developed CONNECT-LR, a web-based consultation system where specialist physicians from 5* centers in Japan answer domestic physicians' inquiries on the curability of locally recurring rectal cancer through surgery. Operation of this system commenced on August 20, 2019.

* Department of Colorectal Surgery of National Cancer Center Hospital East, Department of Lower Intestinal Surgery of The Hospital of Hyogo College of Medicine Hospital, Department of Surgery of Yamagata Prefectural Central Hospital, Digestive Disease Center of Kurume University Hospital, and Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Kansai Medical University Hospital.

Key points of publication

  • With CONNECT-LR, physicians in Japan can for free of charge consult with specialists about the diagnosis and treatment policy for local recurrence of rectal cancer, as well as the available facilities for surgery and their appropriateness.
  • The purpose is to provide more opportunities for patients to receive radical surgery through the establishment of environments where physicians in their own facilities can easily consult with specialist physicians.
  • In the future, when this system proves its usefulness, application to intractable/rare cancers in other areas is expected.

This project was supported by Practical Research Project for Innovative Cancer Control of AMED.
