The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was announced today, which went to William G. Kaelin, Jr., Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza for the discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to 3 giants of oxygen biology.  I am also delighted to work with Professor Semenza through JST ERATO Suematsu Gas Biology Project.

Their work does not only contribute to understanding how small gases regulate biological systems, but also shed light on how we can live along with oxygen throughout our life course. Congratulations!
