The 7th UK-Japan Neuroscience Symposium, 2026

The 7th UK-Japan Neuroscience Symposium was jointly organised by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC), and was held at Christ’s College Cambridge in the United Kingdom over four days from 23 to 26 March 2026.

The Symposium aimed to promote the exchange of knowledge and recent scientific advances and to strengthen research collaboration among neuroscientists in Japan and the UK. The event brought together more than 70 participants, including researchers and representatives from universities, research institutions, and research funding organisations from both countries.

Opening remarks were made by Dr. Mark Palmer of the MRC and Dr. Makiko Kusama of the AMED. This was followed by five thematic sessions: Neuropsychiatric and Developmental Disorders; Learning and Memory; Neurodegenerative Mechanisms and Disease; Sensorimotor Processing and Behaviour; and New Technologies and Therapeutic Advances. Each session featured scientific presentations by Japanese and UK researchers, accompanied by lively interactive discussions.

Keynote lectures were delivered by Professor Sir David Klenerman of the University of Cambridge and Professor Kenichi Ohki of the University of Tokyo, highlighting cutting-edge research achievements in the field of neuroscience. In addition, a poster session, primarily featuring early-career researchers, provided a valuable forum for active discussion and networking among all participants.
This Symposium is held annually on an alternating basis between Japan and the United Kingdom, in keeping with the objectives of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between AMED and the MRC in February 2017 and renewed in September 2022.
