(1) Signing of Memorandum of Cooperation with MRC
The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED; President: Makoto Suematsu) and the Medical Research Council (MRC; CEO: Sir John Savill) of the United Kingdom have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC). A signing ceremony will be held on February 1, 2017 (UK local time) in the United Kingdom.
The MRC is a leading biology/medicine-focused funding agency in the United Kingdom and in the world. Both AMED and the MRC fund a wide spectrum of medical research and development programs covering basic to clinical stages. Cooperation between the two agencies is expected to accelerate collaborative research in biological and medical field both in Japan and the United Kingdom.
Based on the MOC, it is planned to conduct cooperative research projects, joint seminars and symposia, and exchange of personnel and researchers. Collaborative initiatives are presumed to initially start in the areas of regenerative medicine, dementia, drug resistance, and infectious diseases. A workshop will also be held to discuss collaborative areas in further detail.
(2) London Office to be opened
On February 1, 2017, AMED is opening its third* overseas office in London, the United Kingdom’s political and administrative center. The London Office will be located in the City District, an area where numerous local corporations as well as multiple Japanese public organizations maintain offices. Housed in a commercial building, the office is approximately a 10-minute drive away from the MRC.
Assigned to cover Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and Africa, the London Office will strive to strengthen collaborations with those countries, collect and analyze technical and policy information on medical research and development, build networks of contacts, and engage in public relations activities for AMED.
A commemorative opening reception co-organized with the Embassy of Japan in the United Kingdom will be held on the evening of February 1, 2017 (UK local time) at the Embassy, where a signing ceremony for the MOC with the MRC will take place. The reception will be attended by Sir John Savill, CEO of the MRC, and Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer of the UK Department of Health, along with a host of other guests including UK government healthcare officials, researchers based at universities and other research institutes, and representatives of the private sector.
* The other two offices are the Singapore Office opened on June 27, 2016 and the Washington, D.C. Office opened on November 1, 2016.
