Events 03/04/21 / 03/05/21 Asia Pacific Workshop on AMR (Online)

Event Information

Outline

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a global challenge that is particularly acute in the Asia-Pacific Region.
This workshop aims to provide a scientific basis for the establishment of a trans-Pacific AMR coordinating mechanism as an element of the One Health approach.

Public funding institutions from the East Asia Summit participating countries (now forming e-ASIA Member Organizations) and researchers have discussed potential value and possibility of forming a coordinating mechanism to facilitate information sharing on AMR programs, policies, and strategies across countries in the Asia-Pacific Region.

In the meantime, on the policy side, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW) in Japan and the Western Pacific Regional Office of WHO (WPRO) have held several AMR policy discussions within the context of the One Health Approach in order to initiate the development of a regional policy network. In April 2017, the Japan’s first action plan on AMR was established at the Ministerial Conference and the Tokyo AMR One-Health Conference has been held biannually with many participants from several sectors such as high officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations and World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

With these backgrounds, AMED has invited various experts in the field of AMR in this region, including participants of the Tokyo AMR One-Health Conference 2021, in order to promote seamless cooperation and discussion, considering scientific and policy perspectives.

GOALS OF THE WORKSHOP
  1. To share information on current AMR research activities and to identify priorities for future AMR research in the Asia-Pacific Region, including priorities for the future e-ASIA Joint Research Program focused on AMR.
  2. To facilitate scientific and policy discussions about steps regional governments can take to improve regional collaboration and to better understand and address AMR in the region – within the One Health approach.
