Outline

AMED signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the US National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in February 2019, and will participate in its Healthy Longevity Grand Challenge as a Global Collaborator from Japan – a country at the forefront of those experiencing the challenges of an aging society.

The NAM Healthy Longevity Grand Challenge is a new program, established this year (2019) , that solicits good ideas from around the world to generate new innovations to address societal problems related to advancing aging in populations around the world.

There are three award phases:

  • Catalyst Awards: Global Collaborators select and register bold new ideas with the NAM.
  • Challenge Awards: Promising pilot projects are selected from among the Catalyst Awardees.
  • Grand Prizes: The most bold and innovative ideas are selected from among the Challenge Awardees.
Award phases of the Healthy Longevity Grand Challenge

For the Catalyst Awards in the first phase, AMED will register with the NAM selected ongoing research projects which are aligned with the aims of this program. The Challenge Awards in the second phase will be selected by NAM review from among the Catalyst Award recipients registered by Global Collaborators including AMED. The Challenge Award recipients will be supported to test and advance their innovative ideas.

Ten organizations including the NAM, AMED, kENUP Foundation, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and United Kingdom Research and Innovation are participating in the NAM Healthy Longevity Grand Challenge as of March 2019.
