News Releases & Research Results Mechanism of gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori: paving the way for the development of therapeutic modalities other than antibiotic eradication of H. pylori

News Releases & Research Results

Outline

The results of research conducted by Professor Sho Yamasaki of the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, and others.

The key results of research are as follows:

  • The research group elucidated the mechanism of gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). H. pylori is known to cause gastritis and gastric cancer; however, the molecular mechanism underlying this process has not been fully understood.
  • Specifically, the research group discovered that H. pylori extracts cholesterol from the host and adds sugars and lipids to convert it into the compounds that induce gastritis.
  • The results of research are expected to contribute to the establishment of new therapeutic modalities other than antibiotic eradication of H. pylori.

This project was conducted with support from the Advanced Research and Development Programs for Medical Innovation (AMED-CREST) by AMED.

The results of this research project were published online in Journal of Experimental Medicine on September 30.
