Topics President MISHIMA visited the U.S. to attend the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) Symposium and meetings of its Board of Trustees

From June 17 to 23, 2024, AMED President MISHIMA Yoshinao visited Washington D.C., where he made courtesy visits to partner organizations, participated in the 35th Anniversary HFSPO Symposium, and attended the Annual General Meeting of the HFSPO Board of Trustees (BoT) on which he serves as a trustee from Japan.

The 35th Anniversary HFSPO Symposium: “Frontier Life Science in the USA” was held on June 18, 2024, featuring presentations by US-based HFSP awardees, the HFSP Nakasone Award ceremony and lecture (2024 awardee), and high-level panel sessions entitled “Lights and Shadows of Multilateral Scientific Collaboration" and "Basic Discovery Life Science as a Key Engine of Innovation in the 21st Century”. President MISHIMA participated in the latter panel discussion, and he expressed his opinion on the importance of continuous support from basic research to practical applications, based on AMED's efforts and achievements to date.

President MISHIMA attended the Annual General Meeting of the HFSPO Board of Trustees, held on June 19-21, 2024, as a Trustee from Japan.

At the meeting, Prof. YONEDA Yoshihiro, Director General of the Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases at Osaka University, was formally appointed as the next President of HFSPO, succeeding Professor Emeritus NAGATA Shigekazu of Osaka University, who had served as President of HFSPO from 2018 to 2024.
