In Japan, about 30% of causes of death and about 20% of medical expenditure has been accounted for by lifestyle-related diseases including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. Development of measures to prevent their onset and aggravation is, thus, considered our pressing need.
This program promotes the entire process of R&D from basic research to the practical application of research findings by supporting projects on lifestyle-related diseases. The projects collectively address how to better manage various lifestyle factors (e.g. nutrition and diet, physical activity and exercise, rest and sleep, drinking, smoking, and dental/oral health conditions), contribute to developing guidelines on health examination and guidance, investigate disease pathophysiology, explore treatment options, and improve patients’ quality of life. Efforts are made to extend the healthy lifespan and optimize medical treatment/medical expenditure in Japan through this program.
